On 2nd March LGBT rights activist Stuart Milk gave a lecture at LJMU to mark the end of LGBT History Month. Stuart works tirelessly to carry on the legacy of his uncle, Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in the United States. Harvey Milk was a courageous and charismatic leader, but was assassinated after less than a year in office in 1978.
The Harvey Milk Foundation is a not- for-profit global organisation, aiming to empower local, regional, national and global bodies which support all individuals who have been excluded from society, enabling them to participate fully in all societal rights without exception. Stuart spoke about the activities of the Foundation and some of the individuals who have inspired him. At the end of the lecture, Stuart presented a gift to Dr Edward Harcourt, LJMU Pro-Vice-Chancellor (External Engagement), which will be held in Special Collections and Archives. It contains a set of commemorative stamps and a special edition of the Oscar-winning feature documentary The Times of Harvey Milk.
The video of Stuart Milk’s lecture is available in full on the LJMU News web site here.
